It was an interesting take on Snow White and quite different from any others I have read. Set in the mountains of Virginia in the 1940's? and with precious little of any romance, this is a much more psychological story chronicling Snow in Summer's childhood, her father's decline in a stupor/madness when he meets and marries the evil stepmother. There are scenes from the stepmother's point of view and she is a witch. It is dark and creepy. Very creepy. The dwarfs were a nice aspect, though very brief. A very abrupt ending for the length the other events in the book encompass.
Overall, despite its original setting and style, I did not find the book particularly touching or endearing and was in fact disturbed by some of the elements of the story. The atmosphere left a bad aftertaste.
