Picking up the pace. The Spanish Civil War is escalating. The political discussions among the cousins are realistic and nice to see them worked organically into the story. The characters all develop a great deal this book.
Again, Sophie's voice and the setting make this a very interesting and quick read. I think Cooper does such a great job of helping visualize and relive this time period, from the reality of rationing to the crippling fear of loss and the uncertainty of where this war would take the world. However, I really was terribly disappointed in the final volume of this trilogy.
Also, Toby cracks me up sometimes.
