A solidly middle-grade novel, it tells the story of a young boy, the son of a fallen angel and a mortal woman. It has some interesting ideas, not least the inclusion of Tolkien and Lewis in the Woodbine (the first realm of the after-life), but it lacked the sophistication and complexity that would have allowed it to have more appeal to older readers. There is a lot of telling and not much showing. It is only the first in the series, but they are short and do not get a lot done.
Still, the instant Tollers and Jack were introduced, I thought "Those were Tolkien and Lewis' nicknames!" And when they turned out to be a hobbit and a faun, both once professors on Earth of Anglo-Saxon and Medieval studies, well, it was blinkeringly obvious. But it was a neat addition. It seems to have a good concept, but is told nearly too simplistically.
