The Falling Machine - Andrew P. Mayer 2.5 stars

I had a very difficult time getting into this novel. A bit of steampunk, some superheroes, add in a lot of girl-trying-to-prove-her-intelligence-and-choose-her-destiny, a controlling father, a deceased mother, an unwelcome and arrogant suitor, an automaton who just might be more human than most of the characters (and whom our heroine falls in love with for all intents and purposes despite it being a machine) and some hero/secret society posturing and manipulation to decide their future leader and course of action.

It is also the beginning of a series. Had this been a standalone, I would have been vastly more happy to brazen it out. However, the aspect of yet another endless series does not appeal to me so I will not be pursuing this ones, esp. as it did not grab my attention.

However, it was by no means a badly written book and I know several others that enjoyed it, so just not for me.
